Rising star Nick Dunlap is heading back to La Quinta to defend his American Express title this January, where he made golf history last year.
The 21-year-old stunned the golf world in 2024 when he won the tournament as an amateur – something that hadn’t been done on the PGA Tour since Phil Mickelson pulled it off back in 1991.

That win changed everything for Dunlap. He turned pro shortly after and proved it wasn’t a fluke by claiming another victory at the Barracuda Championship in July.
The 2025 tournament, set for January 16-19, has attracted some serious star power.
Patrick Cantlay, Wyndham Clark, Tony Finau, and Rickie Fowler are all coming to the California desert. They’ll be joined by British Open champ Brian Harman, fan favorite Tom Kim, Olympic gold medalist Xander Schauffele, and former PGA Champion Justin Thomas.
One big name who won’t be there? World #1 Scottie Scheffler. He was hoping to kick off his 2025 season at The American Express, but his agent recently confirmed he needs more recovery time before returning to competition.
The tournament, played across three beautiful courses in the Coachella Valley, has become one of the Tour’s most popular early-season stops. With this year’s field, it’s shaping up to be another can’t-miss event.
