The 2025 Masters is shaping up to be one of the most exciting in recent memory, with a mix of legendary champions, rising stars, and surprising newcomers set to compete at Augusta National next April.
Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm lead a star-studded list of past Masters champions who’ll be back to chase another green jacket. They’ll be joined by golf icons like Tiger Woods, who’s won the tournament five times, and Phil Mickelson, a three-time champion.
Twenty former Masters champions have earned their spot in the field. The oldest? Fred Couples, who captured his green jacket way back in 1992.
Some fresh faces are making waves too. Ludvig Åberg, who turned pro just last year, earned his invitation after an impressive showing at the 2024 Masters. He’s part of a new generation that includes rising stars like Tom Kim and Nick Dunlap.
The tournament’s bringing together winners from all of golf’s major championships. Brian Harman, who won The Open, and Wyndham Clark, the U.S. Open champ, will both be looking to add a Masters victory to their resume.
Amateur golf gets its spotlight too. Spain’s Jose Luis Ballester and Noah Kent qualified through their performances at the U.S. Amateur championship.
The PGA Tour’s regular season has already produced some surprising qualifiers. Players like Taylor Pendrith and Kevin Yu earned their first-ever Masters invites by winning Tour events.
There’s still time for more players to qualify. The top 50 in the world rankings by March 31, 2025, will get in, and Augusta National might hand out special invitations to international players.
Rory McIlroy will be there, still chasing the one major that’s eluded him. A Masters win would complete his career Grand Slam – something only five players have ever achieved.
The field’s already packed with talent from around the world, from Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama to Spain’s Jon Rahm to Australia’s Adam Scott.
Several spots are still up for grabs, including one that’ll go to the winner of the Latin American Amateur Championship in January.
It’s worth noting that this list could grow – Augusta National’s famous for its tradition of keeping the field relatively small, but they’re not afraid to add special invitations for players they feel deserve a spot.
