This isn’t your grandfather’s Kapalua tournament anymore. What used to be an exclusive winners-only event has evolved for the third straight year, now welcoming both tournament champions and top performers from last season’s FedExCup standings.
The field is split almost down the middle – 31 players who won PGA Tour events in 2023, plus 29 who earned their spot through strong FedExCup performances.
There’s some serious cash on the line. The Sentry is the first of eight signature events this season, featuring a massive $20 million purse. The winner will take home a cool $3.6 million.
But there’s one notable absence: World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler won’t be teeing it up. He’s recovering from surgery after an injury on Christmas Day. His agent Blake Smith says we’ll see him back in action at The American Express in mid-January.
Viktor Hovland is still planning to compete, despite recently posting about what looked like a broken pinky toe. Talk about playing through pain!
The tournament marks a fresh start for the PGA Tour in what promises to be an interesting 2024 season. With the stunning Hawaiian backdrop and a field packed with talent, it’s the perfect way to kick off the golfing year.
