Ashun Wu stormed through the back nine Sunday with five birdies, firing a 6-under 65 to erase a four-shot deficit and capture the Volvo China Open for the second time in his career.
It’s a special victory for the 39-year-old Wu, who claimed this same title exactly 10 years ago. This marks his fifth career win on the DP World Tour.
Overnight co-leaders Haotong Li and Spain’s Eugenio Chacarra both struggled to 1-over 72s at Enhance Anting Golf Club, opening the door for Wu’s comeback.
Wu trailed Chacarra by three shots at the turn before catching fire. He rattled off three birdies in a four-hole stretch while Chacarra faltered with three bogeys on the back nine.
The way Wu closed was impressive. He finished at 14-under, just one shot ahead of England’s Jordan Smith, who birdied his final hole for a 67. Germany’s Yannik Paul shot 69 to take solo third, while Li, Chacarra and Zecheng Dou (70) shared fourth place.
The DP World Tour stays in China next week for the Hainan Classic.
