Jacob Skov Olesen’s time at the top of The Open Championship leaderboard vanished in a hurry.
The 26-year-old Dane posted a solid 4-under 67 on Thursday at Royal Portrush, joining four others with that score. But there was a warning sign during his post-round interview when Olesen admitted he typically struggles with right-to-left wind.
“I’ve been working on it,” Olesen said.
He’ll need to work on it some more.
Olesen stepped to the first tee Friday morning facing exactly that troublesome wind direction, and disaster struck immediately. The lefty hooked his first drive out of bounds. His second attempt sailed in the opposite direction – also out of bounds.
By the time he finally holed out, Olesen had recorded a quadruple-bogey 8, erasing his entire first-round advantage and dropping back to even par for the championship.
