Brooks Koepka Exits LIV Golf, Future Plans Uncertain
Brooks Koepka is leaving LIV Golf.
The five-time major champion announced his departure Tuesday through a statement released by his management team via the Saudi-backed league. Koepka, 35, who joined LIV in 2022 and reportedly had one year remaining on his contract, hasn’t revealed his immediate competitive plans.
“Brooks Koepka will be stepping away from LIV Golf,” the statement read. “He is deeply grateful to Yasir Al-Rumayyan (governor of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund), Scott O’Neil, and the LIV Golf leadership team, his teammates and the fans. Family has always guided Brooks’ decisions, and he feels this is the right moment to spend more time at home. Brooks will continue to be a huge supporter of LIV Golf and wishes the league and its players continued success. Brooks remains passionate about the game of golf and will keep fans updated on what’s ahead.”
O’Neil, LIV’s CEO, described the split as mutual.
“We have amicably and mutually agreed that Brooks Koepka will no longer compete in the LIV Golf league, following the 2025 season,” O’Neil said. “Brooks is prioritizing the needs of his family and staying closer to home. We appreciate the significant impact he has had on the game and wish him continued success, both on and off the course.”
Koepka’s exit means Smash GC, the team he captained, will now be led by Talor Gooch. The four-player squad will need to fill Koepka’s spot before LIV’s 2026 season begins in February.
What makes this particularly noteworthy is that Koepka was one of LIV’s most successful players. He won five tournaments during his first three years with the league and captured the 2023 PGA Championship while competing under the LIV banner. But his performance dipped significantly last season – he managed just two top-10 finishes and ended 31st in the points standings while missing cuts at three of the four majors.
Off the course, Koepka and his wife Jena faced personal tragedy earlier this year when she suffered a miscarriage. The couple has a 2-year-old son, Crew.
Koepka’s potential path back to the PGA Tour isn’t clear. He’s exempt into the PGA Championship for life as a past champion and into the other three majors through 2028. But rejoining the PGA Tour would require additional steps.
Reports indicate Koepka has informed the PGA Tour of his plans to end his LIV contract and would need to re-apply for Tour membership after letting his expire in 2022. His “reinstatement and disciplinary process” would reportedly include “thoughtful input from the board, including player directors.”
“Brooks Koepka is a highly accomplished professional, and we wish him and his family continued success. The PGA Tour continues to offer the best professional golfers the most competitive, challenging and lucrative environment in which to pursue greatness.”
That’s the statement the PGA Tour released after Koepka’s news broke. The way things stand now, Koepka’s future remains uncertain, though it’s clear family considerations played a major role in his decision to step away from LIV.
