Shots fired on the driving range as Bryson DeChambeau landed a verbal ace against Rory McIlroy.
The two golf stars were warming up for The Crypto.com Showdown at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas when things got spicy. McIlroy and world number one Scottie Scheffler are set to face off against LIV Golf’s DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka in the made-for-TV special.
With microphones catching every word, McIlroy couldn’t resist bringing up some unfinished business.
“I’d like to go up against Bryson and try to get him back for what he did to me at the U.S. Open,” McIlroy said, referring to their recent showdown at Pinehurst No. 2.
DeChambeau’s response? Ice cold.
“To be fair, you kind of did it to yourself.”
Ouch. The burn was especially brutal considering how things played out at Pinehurst. McIlroy had victory in his grasp before stumbling with three bogeys in his final four holes, basically gift-wrapping the trophy for DeChambeau.
McIlroy could only manage a stunned “I don’t really know where to go from there.”
The exchange sets up some serious drama for their singles match, where both players will get six holes to settle the score. With DeChambeau now leading their verbal sparring 2-0, McIlroy’s probably hoping his clubs can do the talking this time around.
