A wild sequence at Pebble Beach’s iconic fourth hole added another chapter to its storied history during Sunday’s AT&T Pro-Am. Cam Davis turned what could’ve been a disaster into a highlight-reel birdie, though it’ll take some doing to top Viktor Hovland’s cliff-hanging heroics from 2018.
Davis found himself 60 yards out in the left rough at the 337-yard par-4. His wedge shot looked perfect – until it wasn’t. His ball collided with Justin Rose’s ball near the hole, sending both shots scattering in opposite directions.
While Rose got to replace his ball, Davis was left with a tricky chip from the left rough, about 20 feet away with the green sloping away. He made it look easy, holing out for his first birdie of the day.

That’s where Hovland’s 2018 U.S. Amateur adventure comes in for comparison. The Norwegian star, facing Devon Bling in the 36-hole final, pushed his drive right into what seemed like no-man’s land. Instead of taking a drop, Hovland scrambled down the cliffside, had his caddie – Oklahoma State coach Alan Bratton – toss him a 60-degree wedge, and somehow pulled off a miraculous shot from the ice plant to within 3 feet.
Hovland’s gutsy play led to one of his six birdies on that hole during the tournament. He took the lead there and never gave it back, eventually winning 6 and 5.
The fourth at Pebble just seems to bring out the extraordinary. Davis’s unconventional birdie might not have required climbing down any cliffs, but it’s earned its own place in the hole’s highlight reel.
