Golf legend Davis Love III is back home recovering after successful open-heart surgery to fix a heart valve issue that doctors had been monitoring for a decade.

CBS’s Jim Nantz spoke with Love on Saturday morning and shared updates during the Farmers Insurance Open broadcast. The surgery took place last week at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, where doctors replaced what Love had known was a leaky valve since 2013.

“I went in healthy,” Love told Nantz, “and I came out healthier.”

The 60-year-old Hall of Famer isn’t wasting any time with his recovery. He’s already started therapy sessions with Randy Myers, Sea Island Resort’s director of golf fitness. It’s a small world in golf – Myers happens to be the father-in-law of Andrew Novak, who was in Saturday’s final group at Torrey Pines.

Love’s been taking it easy on the competitive front lately. Last year, he teed it up just once on the PGA Tour at November’s RSM Classic, though he had to withdraw after shooting 82 in the opening round. He also made three starts on the PGA Tour Champions circuit.

The recovery timeline looks promising. Love expects to be back behind the wheel in March and working on his putting stroke by April. That’s right in line with what doctors typically expect after this kind of procedure.
