Mixed-Team Golf Coming to 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles
The International Golf Federation announced Tuesday that a mixed-team event will be added to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. This new format will pair one male and one female golfer from each nation for a two-day competition featuring 18 holes of foursomes (alternate shot) and 18 holes of four-ball (best ball).
Golf’s Olympic return in 2016 has been building momentum through Paris 2024, but players have been pushing for something more. That’s where this mixed-team format comes in.
The competition will take place at Riviera Country Club between the men’s and women’s individual events. Only players already qualified for the individual Olympic competitions will be eligible, and each nation will be limited to one team.

“Golf was incredibly successful at Paris 2024, and as we continue building on the momentum from Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, we’re excited to bring even more attention to our sport through this additional format,” said Antony Scanlon, IGF’s executive director. “The athletes were very enthusiastic about their desire to play with thier compatriots, and we look forward to watching them compete together in Los Angeles.”
The addition of mixed-team golf is part of a broader Olympic movement toward gender-balanced competition. Five other sports will introduce mixed-gender events in 2028: archery, the 4×100 meter mixed relay, gymnastics, rowing coastal beach sprint and table tennis.
