Ryan McCormick tried a unique approach to managing his on-course frustrations at this week’s Club Car Championship – he literally taped his mouth shut.
The Korn Ferry Tour player, competing at The Landings in Savannah, Georgia, played part of his second round with tape covering his mouth after struggling to control his emotions during play.
“Been having not so fun time this year on the golf course — pretty angry and mad,” McCormick explained in a tour video shared on X. “So, I figured I’ve tried a lot of things, and I just figured I’d shut myself up, so I put tape over my mouth.”
McCormick’s unorthodox strategy came after exhausting other options. “Just too angry on the golf course,” he said. “So, I’ve run out of ideas.”
The idea wasn’t completely spontaneous. McCormick had “thought about the tape thing” a few weeks ago but was concerned it might distract his playing partners. There was an unexpected benefit, though – it streamlined communication with his caddie.
“I’d just point and ask him for a read sometimes,” McCormick said.
The tape also gave him an unexpected superhero vibe. “I felt like Bane, like in Batman,” he said. “Just, like, muzzle myself.”
Unfortunately, the unusual approach didn’t translate to better scoring. McCormick shot 73-72 to miss the cut, continuing his difficult season. He’s now missed two cuts, withdrawn from two events, and finished outside the top 40 three times in his seven Korn Ferry Tour starts this year.
