Luke Donald to Captain Europe for 2027 Ryder Cup, Aiming for Historic Third Straight Win
Luke Donald will return as Europe’s Ryder Cup captain for the 2027 competition at Adare Manor in Ireland, making him the first captain in 30 years to lead in three consecutive matches.
Donald, who guided Europe to victories in Rome (2023) and at Bethpage Black (2024), has a chance to become the first captain to win three straight Ryder Cups outright.
“The last two Ryder Cups have meant a lot to me and my family,” Donald said. “I didn’t imagine this third time would come. Celebrating on that Sunday night in New York after a pressure-packed week in a tough environment, I thought maybe my job was done. But maybe there is a little more story to tell.”
The 48-year-old Englishman and former world No. 1 wasn’t originally slated for the captaincy. He stepped in when Henrik Stenson relinquished the role after joining LIV Golf ahead of the 2023 matches. Donald hasn’t missed a beat since taking over.
At Bethpage Black last September, Donald’s team built a seven-point lead heading into Sunday singles and held on despite a hostile New York crowd. That performance prompted U.S. captain Keegan Bradley to call him “the best European Ryder Cup captain of all time.”
Donald admitted he considered the risks of returning for a third stint.
“You obviously do question the possibility of losing if you go again,” he said. “That is always the possibility in sports. You can only give yourself the best opportunity. Winning and losing is not something you can control.”
The 2027 matches will mark the 100th anniversary of the Ryder Cup. Europe hasn’t lost on home soil since 1993 – a streak Donald is now responsible for maintaining.
“What if this doesn’t go right and we are the first team to lose at home in 34 years? Does that taint anything?” Donald considered. “I think there were many more pros than there were cons, and that’s ultimately why I’m sitting here.”
The Americans haven’t yet named their captain for 2027. Tiger Woods remains the top choice, though he’s reportedly undecided about whether he has time for the role while leading the PGA Tour’s organizational overhaul. The PGA of America has encouraged Woods to make his decision within the month.
Donald isn’t concerned about who he’ll face. “Whoever the captain is, it doesn’t really change my role,” he said. “My role is to formulate a plan to give our team the best opportunity and what the U.S. are doing is kind of inconsequential to that.”
Bernard Gallacher was the last captain to serve three consecutive terms (1991-1995), winning his final appearance at Oak Hill. Donald’s appointment comes partly due to other potential captains like Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood, and Graeme McDowell being with LIV Golf. Justin Rose has expressed interest in playing in 2027 rather than captaining, while Francesco Molinari was another potential option.
“History is obviously important to me. As a team, as Ryder Cup Europe, we all play for history,” Donald said. “We talk about it a lot, about the guys who paved the way for us and the responsibility we have to inspire next generations. But I don’t think I have ever thought about history through a personal lens. I just try to enjoy the journey and the day-to-day work to create an environment that gives the players the opportunity for success.”
Walter Hagen captained the Americans to four victories, and Ben Hogan led the U.S. to three wins, though neither did so in consecutive matches. Tony Jacklin captained Europe three times, with his players securing the trophy each time, including a tie in 1989 where Europe retained as defending champion.
For Donald, the opportunity now exists to make unique history as the first captain to win outright three straight times.
