Max Homa caught fire at Quail Hollow during Round 2 of the PGA Championship, turning his tournament around after Thursday’s back-nine struggles.

Starting his Friday round on the back nine, Homa immediately showed he’d found something in his game. He birdied the par-4 10th and par-3 13th before nearly acing the 347-yard, par-4 14th. The tap-in eagle jumpstarted what would become a special round.

He didn’t slow down, adding a birdie at the par-5 15th to reach 5 under through just six holes, moving to 3 under for the championship.

What makes Quail Hollow particularly challenging is the closing stretch known as the “Green Mile” (holes 16-18). Homa navigated the first two holes with pars before chipping in for birdie at 18, completing his first nine in a blistering 6-under 30.

At that point, he’d climbed to 4 under overall, just two shots off the lead. This performance shouldn’t be surprising – Homa’s first PGA Tour victory came at this very course in the 2019 Wells Fargo Championship (now Truist Championship).

He maintained solid play on his second nine with two birdies against a single bogey, posting a 7-under 64. That’s his lowest round on Tour since August 2023 and shatters his previous best major championship round by three shots.

When Homa signed his card, he sat tied for third, three strokes behind the leader.
