The R&A announced Tuesday it’s making significant changes to the Old Course at St. Andrews ahead of the 2027 Open Championship, aiming to “refine the strategic challenge for elite players.”

Six holes will be lengthened and several bunkers relocated or extended in what’s the most substantial renovation to the historic links since 2015. These modifications come after a thorough review following the 2022 Open, where Cam Smith posted a record-setting 20-under 268 – matching the lowest score to par in major championship history.

The changes will add 132 yards to the championship layout, bringing the total yardage to 7,445. Here’s what’s changing:

  • The 5th hole will gain 35 yards
  • The 6th will be extended by 17 yards with new bunkers added
  • The 7th hole stretches 22 yards longer
  • The 10th adds 29 yards and new bunkers
  • Expanded tee boxes on the 11th and 16th will add 21 and 10 yards respectively

The 16th hole is getting the most dramatic overhaul. Beyond the length adjustment, they’re restoring the playing area left of the iconic Principal’s Nose and Deacon Sime bunkers, while adding two new bunkers that bring more risk to the left side.

Bunkers along the right side of the second hole will be shifted further down the fairway and to the left. The 9th will also see new bunkers that should come into play more for top players.

“Every generation has played a part in shaping the Old Course, and this latest program continues that long tradition,” said Neil Coulson, chief executive of the St. Andrews Links Trust. “The work will restore features that have changed subtly over time and refine others to preserve the course’s unique character.”

These changes strike a balance between preserving the Old Course’s historic character while addressing how modern equipment and athleticism have changed the game. The R&A clearly wants to ensure that St. Andrews remains a proper test for the world’s best when they return in 2027.

Work is set to begin next week.
