Play resumed at 5:01 p.m. EDT in the second round of the CJ Cup Byron Nelson after a marathon six-hour, 15-minute weather delay. The horn had initially sounded at 10:46 a.m. at TPC Craig Ranch when lightning threatened the area.
Scottie Scheffler had perfect timing, reclaiming the outright lead just minutes before play was halted. The world No. 1 made his move with an eagle on his ninth hole of the day.
After opening with a blistering 10-under 61 on Thursday, Scheffler had been stuck in neutral with eight consecutive pars to start Friday’s round in McKinney, Texas. That changed at the par-5 18th—his ninth hole—where he launched a 233-yard approach to within 10 feet and drained the eagle putt.
That surge pushed Scheffler to 12 under for the tournament, giving him a two-shot cushion over Jhonattan Vegas, who was 2 under through seven holes when play stopped. Patton Kizzire (through 7) and Will Gordon (through 5) sat three back at 9 under.
Jordan Spieth, paired with Scheffler, showed some resilience after a rocky start. Following a double bogey on his third hole of the day (the par-4 12th), Spieth responded with four birdies over his next six holes before the suspension. He’s now at 4 under for the tournament, tied for 43rd.
Players are once again using lift, clean and place rules, as Wednesday’s downpour left the course soggy for the second straight day.
