Couples cherishes family time at PNC Championship
Fred Couples loves the PNC Championship. It’s not just another tournament for the smooth-swinging veteran — it’s a family celebration that holds special meaning as his career evolves.
“This event is something I circle on my calendar every year,” Couples says. “Playing alongside family in a competitive setting creates memories you just can’t get anywhere else.”
The 1992 Masters champion isn’t thinking about stepping away from competitive golf anytime soon, either. He’s still got that effortless power that’s been his trademark for decades.
“As long as I can still move it out there reasonably well, I’ll keep playing,” he says. “The body doesn’t recover quite like it used to, but I’ve adjusted my practice schedule and preparation.”
When it comes to Augusta National, Couples’ face lights up. The Masters Tournament remains the highlight of his golfing year. He’s made the cut there an astonishing 30 times and continues to compete against players half his age.
“Augusta National is special. There’s simply nothing like driving down Magnolia Lane,” Couples explains. “I know every inch of that course, and that knowledge still gives me an advantage. The roars on Sunday afternoon? That’s something you never forget.”
Couples has watched golf transform throughout his career. The game today barely resembles the one he dominated in the 90s.
“The equipment changes have been massive, but it’s what these kids do with their bodies that’s really changed everything,” he notes. “Power is key now. These young guys are athletes first, golfers second. They hit it so far that course setup has had to evolve.”
Despite the changes, Couples’ classic swing and laid-back demeanor continue to make him a fan favorite wherever he tees it up. The PNC Championship, with its family focus, seems to bring out the best in him.
