The Ryder Cup returns to American soil this September, with the 45th edition set for Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York. The prestigious team competition will run from September 27-29, with Team USA looking to reclaim the trophy after Europe’s convincing 16½-11½ victory in Italy last year.

What began as a simple USA vs Great Britain matchup in 1927 has evolved significantly over the decades. The competition expanded to include Irish players from 1973-77 before opening its doors to all European golfers in 1979, creating the Team Europe we know today.

Like many sporting traditions, the Ryder Cup has weathered historical disruptions. World War II halted play from 1939-45. The 9/11 terrorist attacks pushed the 2001 matches to 2002, and most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the 2020 competition until 2021.

The biennial battle has produced memorable moments, fierce rivalries, and dramatic comebacks throughout its storied history. Team Europe currently holds the cup, but Bethpage Black’s notoriously difficult layout and vocal New York crowds should create a formidable home-field advantage for the Americans in September.
