Sahith Theegala has withdrawn from the PGA Championship with a neck injury, marking his second consecutive tournament exit for the same reason.

The injury first forced Theegala out of the Truist Championship last week after he posted an 8-over 78 in Saturday’s round. Now he’s pulled out of Quail Hollow just before tournament play begins.

Alex Smalley has stepped in to take Theegala’s spot in the 156-player field.

It’s been a challenging season for Theegala, who hasn’t cracked the top 15 in any of his 13 starts this year. The timing couldn’t be worse for his Ryder Cup aspirations, as he’s currently sitting 33rd in the points standings. That’s a significant distance from contention for a team spot, and these withdrawals only further complicate his path to making the U.S. squad.
