World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler’s return to golf is on hold after a freak Christmas accident left him with an injured right hand.

The reigning Masters champion won’t be teeing it up at next week’s American Express tournament, still recovering from surgery after a broken glass cut his palm while prepping Christmas dinner.

It’s a tough break for Scheffler, who’s been absolutely on fire lately. He wrapped up 2023 with a win at the Hero World Challenge in December, capping off what might be the best year of his career.

Just how good was his 2023? Try nine worldwide wins, including that green jacket at Augusta, the FedExCup trophy, and an Olympic gold medal hanging around his neck.

The injury happened on December 27, and doctors initially suggested a three to four week recovery time. While he’s had to scratch the American Express from his calendar, there’s still hope he’ll be ready for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am later this month.

That Pebble Beach appearance would be huge – it’s one of the Tour’s new signature events, and everyone’s eager to see if Scheffler can pick up right where he left off.

For now, golf’s hottest player is stuck watching from the sidelines, probably wishing he’d ordered takeout for Christmas dinner instead.
