The first PGA Tour event of 2024 is getting bigger, bucking the trend of shrinking field sizes across the tour.
The Sentry, played at Hawaii’s beautiful Kapalua course, will welcome 64 players to kick off the new year – that’s five more than last year and nearly double the typical turnout from past decades.

It’s quite a change from when the tournament regularly hosted just 30-something players. The jump in numbers comes from a new rule that includes both 2024 tournament winners and the top 50 players in the FedExCup standings.
But not everyone who’s eligible will make the trip to Maui.
Rory McIlroy has already announced he’ll skip The Sentry to start his year in Dubai instead. He’s not alone – several European stars might pass on the Hawaiian opener too.
Three potential Ryder Cup players – Matthieu Pavon, Tommy Fleetwood, and Aaron Rai – are scheduled to be in Abu Dhabi for team matches just five days after The Sentry wraps up.
Though it’s worth noting that Fleetwood managed both events last year, playing in Hawaii before jetting off to Dubai the following week.
The tournament’s field is constantly evolving. Of the 59 players who teed it up at Kapalua last January, 24 didn’t qualify to return this time around.
The growing field at The Sentry stands out even more as the PGA Tour moves toward more exclusive, limited-field events for 2024. It’s becoming one of the rare tournaments where more players – not fewer – will get a chance to compete.
