Tommy Fleetwood’s stellar 2024 campaign added another trophy Sunday as he fired a 7-under 65 to win the DP World India Championship by two shots over Keita Nakajima.
The victory gives Fleetwood his third significant achievement in three months. He captured the FedExCup for his first PGA Tour win on American soil, helped Team Europe reclaim the Ryder Cup, and now has secured his first DP World Tour title of the season.
Nakajima started the final round at Delhi Golf Club with a two-shot advantage and played flawlessly without a bogey. But Fleetwood overtook him with a blistering stretch of four consecutive birdies beginning at the par-3 seventh, turning a two-shot deficit into a two-shot lead.
“I feel like for all the good that’s happened this year, a couple of things have disappointed me,” Fleetwood said. “Another win, it feels great.”
The 34-year-old Englishman had been surprisingly absent from the winner’s circle on the DP World Tour this season despite his PGA Tour success. Even more problematic, he wasn’t eligible for the circuit’s final two events.
That’s changed now. His eighth career European tour victory vaults him from 94th to 25th in the Race to Dubai standings, qualifying him for both the Abu Dhabi Championship and season-ending Tour Championship in Dubai.
What made the win particularly special was watching his 8-year-old son, Frankie, sprint onto the 18th green after Fleetwood tapped in for par to finish at 22-under 266.
“All day today, I had in my mind, ‘Could I put myself in position to make that happen?'” Fleetwood said. “It’s just one of those little things it means a lot to me. It means so much to me. That was really cool. That’s what I wanted to do all day.”
The moment fulfilled a wish his son had expressed during a recent round together, telling his father he’d never won a tournament where the boy could run onto the green to celebrate.
Nakajima struggled with accuracy off the tee when trying to mount a late charge, though his putting kept him within striking distance. His 69 moved him into the top 10 on the list of European tour players in line for PGA Tour cards next year.
Shane Lowry (68), Thriston Lawrence (65) and Alex Fitzpatrick (67) shared third place at 270.
Rory McIlroy, making his first competitive appearance in India, birdied his final hole for a 71 to finish tied for 26th, 11 shots behind Fleetwood.
