A rising Spanish golf star is joining forces with his childhood hero Sergio Garcia in LIV Golf’s upcoming season.

Luis Masaveu, just 22 years old, has been tapped to join Garcia’s Fireballs GC team. It’s a dream come true for the Madrid native, who grew up watching Garcia’s biggest moments.

“I’ve been watching him since I was a kid, him winning the Masters and in the Ryder Cup,” Masaveu said. “It’s just incredible.”

The young Spaniard has already shown he’s got serious game. He made it to the semifinals of last year’s U.S. Amateur at Hazeltine, only falling to eventual champion Josele Ballester.

Before turning pro last October, Masaveu climbed as high as 16th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. He’s also got some impressive hardware to his name, including the 2024 Portuguese International Amateur title.

He’s even proven he can hang with the pros. Masaveu earned low-amateur honors at both the 2022 and 2024 Spanish Opens on the DP World Tour.

His pro career is off to a solid start too. In his first tournament as a professional, he finished tied for ninth at an Asian Tour event in Qatar.

Garcia knows there will be a learning curve for his new teammate.

“Obviously, it’s his first year as a pro and coming in and playing with the big guns,” Garcia said. “I think it’s going to be a good learning experience.”

But Masaveu won’t be alone out there. He’ll be joining a team that includes Abraham Ancer and David Puig – his former Spanish National Team teammate.

“All three of us are going to be there to support him, to cheer him on and make sure that he can enjoy his game,” Garcia added.

Masaveu fills the spot left by Eugenio Chacarra on the Fireballs roster. There’s now just one open spot left in LIV Golf for this season, though reports suggest Tom McKibbin is likely to join Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII team when play begins next month.
