Trevor Gutschewski found his winning form again Thursday, showing that championship golf is never too far out of reach.
The incoming Florida freshman and son of tour pro Scott Gutschewski captured the Western Junior Championship by one shot at the Harvester Club in Rhodes, Iowa. It’s his first significant victory since winning the U.S. Junior Amateur last July, and it comes right after missing the cut at the U.S. Open at Oakmont.
Gutschewski finished at 7 under after a closing 2-under 70, edging out Cameron Kuchar, the oldest son of PGA Tour veteran Matt Kuchar. The younger Gutschewski made his move with three birdies in his final six holes to secure the win.
Kuchar, who’s committed to TCU for 2026, matched Gutschewski’s back-nine 34 in the final round, but his second-round 74 proved too much to overcome despite leading with an opening 67.
Trevor’s older brother Luke, a former Iowa State golfer, was on the bag for the victory.
This win represents a significant turnaround for Gutschewski. After his U.S. Junior triumph last summer, he hit a rough patch with a missed cut at the Korn Ferry Tour’s Pinnacle Bank Championship, a T-262 at the U.S. Amateur, and middling results in several other events. His struggles continued this spring with a disappointing showing at the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley and back-to-back 80s at Oakmont last week.
With this victory, Gutschewski joins an impressive list of Western Junior champions dating back to 1914. Past winners include Jim Furyk (1987), Rickie Fowler (2005), Collin Morikawa (2013), and other notable names who went on to successful professional careers.
