Will Zalatoris Withdraws Late from Farmers Insurance Open

Will Zalatoris Withdraws Late from Farmers Insurance Open image

Will Zalatoris pulled out of the Farmers Insurance Open just hours before his scheduled Thursday tee time, dealing another blow to an already depleted field at Torrey Pines.

The 28-year-old’s withdrawal comes as he’s trying to rediscover his major-contending form after back surgery. He’s been making steady progress since his 2023 microdiscectomy, even adding 15 pounds to help stabilize his frame. This would’ve been his third start in four weeks – he’s coming off a solid T12 finish at the American Express.

Torrey’s field was already looking thin with several notable absences, including California natives Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa. The course is pulling double duty this season – it’s set to host next month’s Genesis Invitational too, after the Tour moved it from Riviera because of the LA wildfires.

The late scratches created a bit of musical chairs with the tee times. Ryan Moore initially took Zalatoris’ 12:34 p.m. ET slot alongside Maverick McNealy and Justin Rose on the North Course. But Moore ended up withdrawing too, making way for Robert Garrigus.

Gary Woodland also withdrew late, with no replacement named. Like Zalatoris, no official reason was given for his exit.

The way things are going at Torrey, the tournament staff might want to keep those alternate lists handy. Between the high-profile absences and last-minute withdrawls, they’re certainly getting their money’s worth from the backup plans.
