Jon Rahm secured his second straight LIV Golf season points title Sunday without winning a single event all year, capping his season with a blistering 11-under 60 at The Club at Chatham Hills. But even that wasn’t enough for the tournament victory, as Sebastian Munoz birdied the first playoff hole to claim the Indianapolis trophy.
Munoz’s victory came just two days after he made LIV Golf history by shooting 59 with a double bogey on his card. The Colombian finished regulation with back-to-back birdies for a final-round 65, catching Rahm at 22 under while the Spaniard was already hitting balls on the range preparing for a potential playoff.
It’s the second straight playoff heartbreak for Rahm, who also lost on the first extra hole last week outside Chicago to Dean Burmester in a three-way playoff that included Josele Ballester. This time, Munoz’s birdie on the par-4 18th sealed the deal.
What makes Rahm’s season title remarkable is how he outpointed Joaquin Niemann, who won five times this year. Niemann shot 66 on Sunday to tie for fourth at 17 under, his first top-10 finish of the year that didn’t end with a trophy.
Munoz’s victory also propelled his Torque GC squad to the team championship with a combined 64 under par, shattering the previous LIV record of 53 under.
The drama wasn’t limited to the top of the leaderboard. Ian Poulter needed a strong finish to avoid relegation, and he delivered by birdieing four of his last five holes for a 67. His tie for 17th was just enough to keep his LIV Golf card. His Majesticks teammate Henrik Stenson wasn’t so fortunate. Stenson needed to sink a 20-foot birdie putt on the final hole to stay on tour, but when the ball slid past, his relegation was sealed and Poulter was safe.
