Worst Break at US Open: J.J. Spaun’s Precise Shot Faces Brutal Rejection image

J.J. Spaun couldn’t have been more precise with his approach shot on Oakmont’s second hole Sunday. In fact, he was too precise.

His perfectly struck wedge from 94 yards took one hop, smacked the flagstick, and ricocheted backward with cruel momentum. The ball didn’t just trickle off the green – it rolled a full 50 yards away from the hole.

That’s the kind of break that makes U.S. Open Sunday even more brutal. Spaun couldn’t save par after the unfortunate bounce, and it started a troubling trend. He opened his final round with three straight bogeys, quickly falling three shots behind leader Sam Burns.
