Sergio Garcia isn’t interested in a Ryder Cup captain’s pick — at least not with his current form.
The European Ryder Cup legend shot 79-69 at Quail Hollow to finish near the bottom of the PGA Championship leaderboard. When asked about his Ryder Cup prospects, Garcia was refreshingly candid.
“It is there if I play better,” Garcia said Sunday. “Obviously the way I’m playing, even if Luke offered me a pick right now, I would tell him no. I need to get better.”
European captain Luke Donald made it clear earlier this week that no player is guaranteed a spot on his team, though he does have six discretionary picks at his disposal. Garcia, Europe’s all-time points leader in the competition, understands he needs to earn his way back.
“I need to get more where I was just before the Masters,” he continued. “Just show myself and show everyone that my game is solid, and it can help Team Europe. It’s as simple as that.”
The 45-year-old Spaniard won LIV Golf Hong Kong in March but has struggled in the majors, missing the cut at Augusta and performing poorly at the PGA. He’s not currently eligible for the year’s final two majors, though he could attempt to qualify.
Garcia last represented Europe in the 2021 Ryder Cup before joining LIV Golf. Having reportedly rejoined the DP World Tour, he’s now eligible to make what would be his 11th Ryder Cup appearance.
“The good thing is that there’s still two or three months until the team is finalized,” Garcia said. “So I’ll have time to gain some confidence and improve a little bit on my game.”
